UPEI Wind Symphony presents Into the Silent Land
The UPEI Wind Symphony will present its final performance of this Fall semester on Thursday, November 21 at 7:30 PM at the Homburg Theatre at the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown. The centrepiece of the programming is “Into the Silent Land”. This profoundly emotional work reflects on the December 14, 2012 tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, where twenty children and six educators were killed by a gunman. Written by American Steve Danyew, who attended this school for grades 3 -5, “Into the Silent Land” is both a funeral march and lament. It communicates through music the grief felt by the families of lost ones. Danyew incorporates an excerpt from Christina Rossetti’s poem “Remember”, which will be narrated by Johanna Forbes, an eleven-year old Grade 6 student from Spring Park Elementary School.
Among other works will be Gustav Holst’s “First Suite in Eb”, one of the signature works of the wind band repertoire. Oscar’s Navarro’s piece “The Fly” will also be performed. It is a highly descriptive and entertaining work. Soloist for this recital is Dr. Dale Sorensen, UPEI’s new brass professor. He will be featured in Guilmant’s “Morceau Symphonique”, which exploits the tonal, technical, and expressive elements of the trombone.
The Grade 9 Band will be performing (in uniform – black dress pants, black shoes and black socks for females and males, as well as a white collared shirt for males) as part of the Remembrance Day Assembly for Stonepark staff and students on Thursday, November 7, 2019.
If your student’s band sweater no longer fits, it can be exchanged for a different size on Tuesday or Wednesday of this week.
The cookie dough orders will arrive on Thursday, November 21, 2019, 3:00 – 6:00 pm
All orders must be picked up on that date (there is no place to store the dough at the school).
Thank you for your support!
